The 1976 Time Capsule

The Sylvania History Buffs, a group of history enthusiasts that came together in 1974, took up a collection of objects throughout 1976 in celebration of the United States Bicentennial. They intended to bury a time capsule to be opened 50 years later. When collecting items that best represented Sylvania in 1976, they requested everyone bring two of everything. Of the pairs of objects, one went into the ground while the duplicate was set aside and put into a time capsule that remained indoors. This spare capsule was housed at the Sylvania Branch Library and eventually moved to the Cooke-Kuhlman House and museum, kept as a backup in case the objects in the earth were damaged. Below are the contents of both the capsule unearthed at Burnham Park in July of 2026 and the interior capsule opened at the Cooke-Kuhlman House and museum. Some of these objects, due to their condition, have been photographed and then disposed of.
